THE committee running the Long Buckby Tennis Tournament has had to cancel the popular event due mainly to the weather and to the playing surface conditions.
Organisers said forecasts for this week were poor and made the erection of the courts difficult.
But the main consideration was to avoid making it difficult to use the sports field in the coming weeks for other sporting fixtures.
Organisers say entries will be refunded for those who paid by cheque. They have not been banked and will be torn up. Those that paid by cash will have to make a request for a refund.
“We apologise for the inconvenience caused but feel it is the best decision for all parties involved,” said Charles Jackson, chairman of the tournament committee.
“We have never had to make a decision like this before, and the last time the event had a problem like this was in 1985 when five inches of rain fell on the Saturday.”
