THE newly elected Northamptonshire Police Commissioner Adam Simmonds has welcomed government proposals which aim to cut drunkenness in towns.
Suggestions include minimum prices, orders to restrict the sale of alcohol between midnight and 6am, and levies for late-night licences to contribute to policing costs.
Mr Simmonds said: “I strongly welcome these ideas which will bring tougher actions to stamp out drunkenness and violence in Northamptonshire’s town centres.
“I recently spent an entire weekend night shift with police in Northamton town centre. I was frankly shocked by the level of drunkenness, violence and anti-social behaviour with which the police had to deal.”
Mr Simmonds also welcomed the appointment of Northamptonshire’s Chef Constable Adrian Lee to a national policing role on these issues.
