Daventry Town came back from conceding a goal after 20 minutes to Southam Town, to continue an undefeated run of pre-season matches.
But returning manager Darran Foster was left an unhappy man, saying his team were toothless in attack.
“I was very disappointed with the performance,” said Foster.
“We have picked up some bad habits which we need to remove very quickly. We are overplaying the ball in many areas and simply not sharp enough in attack.
“Of course I’m pleased with the results so far, the draw with Corby Town was very pleasing but we need to increase our work rate and start showing some quality football.”
Foster has acted quickly to fill the gap left by the injury to striker Tom Lorraine, who has a broken wrist, by signing ex-Birmingham City striker Deqwon Ebanks on a three-month loan from Tamworth.
Strong, with rapid pace and a keen eye for goal, Foster will be hoping Ebanks forms a strong partnership up front with striker Ashley Robinson, who was again on target against Southam.
At Southam, Town went behind to a goal from Alex Roberts, Daventry keeper Richard Morris getting a good hand to the ball, but not enough to prevent Southam from taking an early lead.
Liam Dolman unusually lost the ball at his feet allowing striker Simeon Smith with a free run and shot at goal, but Daventry keeper Morris prevented the Southam striker from scoring with a fine save.
Southam could have increased their lead, but it was Daventry who equalised, Joe Coleman won the ball out on the right and found Mykel Beckley, who delivered a fine cross to Robinson, who scrambled the ball into the net, right on half-time.
Another great cross from Beckley, having another good game, narrowly failed to reach the outstretched foot of Josh Blake, as Daventry tried to take advantage of the strong breeze in the second half.
Daventry were awarded a penalty for handball. Robinson was unlucky to see his kick hit the post, as Southam began to tire.
Southam made five substitutions and this not surprisingly upset the balance of their side and it was the in- form Mykel Beckley who put Town into the lead, the ball dropping kindly for him to hit his shot wide of the sixteen year old Southam youth keeper Kieran Conway.
Town’s final game pre –season match is against Sutton Coldfield-based Romulus on Saturday at Communications Park.
