BEDFONT Town became the sixth Central Division side to do the double over Daventry Town this season after a game of two penalty kicks and two sendings-off at The Orchard on Saturday.
Regular full-back Tommy Brewer moved into midfield for Bedfont and promtly fired home a hat-trick. This began with a 15th-minute spot-kick awarded when Jason Lambe was the meat in the sandwich between Daventry goalkeeper Joe Mellings and a defender.
A potential Daventry equaliser from Josh O’Grady was ruled out because of a belated offside flag. Tom Berwick had a penalty saved by Bedfont goalkeeper Gary Ross after he was fouled inside the box.
Despite all this Bedfont were the better side in both halves and were quick to consolidate their 2-0 win at Communications Park earlier in the season.
Berwick and O’Grady both had further shots saved while Mellings also did well in the visiting goal.
Brewer clinched all three points with two further strikes inside the hour.
The emergency midfield player reacted first to a knock-down from Tommy Kanek and netted from close range before completing his hat-trick three minutes later with a neatly-taken goal.
In the closing stages, Berwick fired wide and Adam Confue also spurned a chance to reduce the deficit when his shot was well-saved by Bedfont’s Ross.
With Town manager Mark Kinsella staying behind to watch Long Buckby’s UCL top-of-the-table clash with King’s Lynn, it was left to his assistant Andy Reece to deal with the double sending-off involving Ashley Robinson.
The Daventry striker appeared to retaliate when head-butted in the 87th minute and was red-carded along with home goalkeeper Ross who protested loudly that he was the victim of mistaken identity.
Whatever the rights and wrongs of the incident, the players continued their altercation on a side pitch having both been given their marching orders and are sure to pick up minimum three-match bans.
It was an unsavoury end to a match which saw Bedfont maintain 13th place in the table, six notches above Daventry who remain locked on 44 points alongside Woodford United with Fleet and Marlow firmly in the relegation slots.
