PUBS and clubs across the Daventry area raised £1,640 for charity over a weekend.

Over Easter local pubs and clubs, and their patrons ran fundraising events for the Northamptonshire appeal to refurbish a new haematology unit at Northampton General Hospital.

The annual fundraising drive is led by John Birch from Daventry.

The money raised over the weekend totalled £1,640 and Keith Marlow from Casey’s Club presented a cheque to a representative from Macmillan.

Cherida Plumb, fundraising manager for Macmillan in Northamptonshire, said: “It is fantastic to have the continued support of so many of Daventry’s pubs and clubs.

“Their considerable support over the years has been amazing and has contributed to provision of Macmillan services for people affected by cancer.

“This money will continue to help people locally by contributing towards the cost of refurbishing the haematology unit, which will considerably improve the conditions in which people receive treatment for blood cancers, while also providing on-site consultants’ rooms, a private area in which people can receive life-changing news, and a relaxing environment in which to deal with the affects of their treatment.

“We are very grateful to the publicans who have contributed this year, the money raised will go towards helping us reach the £1.55 million needed to fund the refurbishment.”

Mr Birch said: “Thanks are due to Maggie Humphrey who left Byfield Village Club and ran round several village pubs dressed as a nun, Keith and the staff at Casey’s, The Red Lion at Crick, The George at Kilsby and the Crown at West Haddon and particularly to all their customers who donated so generously.”
