A CITIZENSHIP course at Danetre School has seen students aiming to make a difference.
A number of pupils have tried to launch campaigns on a variety of different subjects.
This includes improving the facilities for young people in the town and wider issues, including promoting the use of Fairtrade products across the country, cleaning up the environment and reducing the rent businesses have to pay for shop units.
This has led to them arranging meetings with politicians, local councillors and business leaders as well as organising petitions and making t-shirts and posters to showcase their campaigns.
Citizenship teacher Hannah Stirling said: “They have all worked really hard to fight these campaigns and have been really impressed with the effort they have put in.”
Some of the pupils have decided to launch the campaigns based on their own experiences.
Fifteen-year-old Rebekah Wright said: “We live in Daventry and there is not a lot to do so we would like to see something like a bowling alley, somewhere that young people would like to go. Otherwise we would have to travel out of the area.”
Emily Print, also 15, added: “We have got a meeting with Chris Heaton-Harris, the MP for Daventry, so we hope he will listen to our concerns.
“He has told us already that this is something that has been thought of.”
The work the pupils have undertaken will lead towards their future exam grades.
Miss Stirling added: “They have organised their own meetings with people such as the MP and local councillors. They have really taken the initiative.
“The work they have put in is going to make a real difference to their GCSE results.”
