A DAVENTRY man is planning a charity cycle ride from London to Paris in aid of breast cancer.

George Aird, from Wilson Close on the town’s Timken estate, will be cycling the 300 miles in order to raise money for Breast Cancer Care.

Mr Aird said: “This all came about because the company I work for as a product manager, Makita UK in Milton Keynes, has adopted Breast Cancer Care as the company’s charity of the year and I really wanted to play my own personal part with fundraising and enjoy the ride of course.”

He will be joined by cycling companion Martin Sisley.

The pair have been in training since February for the four-day event which will see some 70 competitors and crew members undertake the challenge.

They have to use their own standard road bikes and have committed to using every available moment to honing their fitness and performance to ensure success.

Mr Aird said: “We should average 15 miles an hour but this isn’t a race, we just want to complete the course for the benefit of the charity.

“With almost 50,000 people diagnosed with breast cancer every year nearly all of us know someone whose life has been touched in this way.

“But while we’re supporting the lady in your life, don’t forget that breast cancer can affect men as well.

“It’s rare but around 300 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.

“The partnership between Makita and Breast Cancer Care will go a long way to helping support around 850,000 people living with a diagnosis and play a vital role in helping to increase awareness of the disease.”

The cycling duo’s personal aim is to raise £10,000 for the charity.

Makita has also produced a special pink edition of one of its drills. For every drill sold the firm will donate £5 to the charity.
