POLICE continued their campaign to clamp down on metal theft with a day of action in Daventry.

The officers were situated behind the Landmark Hotel last Thursday where they stopped and checked passing vehicles.

Metal theft has become a growing problem with churches around the Daventry district amongst the buildings targeted by vandals.

Sgt Martin Treen, from the Daventry rural policing team, said: “We didn’t see any metal theft-related offences on the day.

“We stopped more than 30 vehicles and, with the help of trading standards and the council, we inspected the vehicles to make sure they had the correct licences.

“We are now planning on doing a day of action every month at a different location in the Daventry area in a bid to continue this work.

“There has been a rise in metal theft-related crimes over the past few years and we are continuing to work hard to try and cut this out.”
