PEOPLE in Weedon have been left shocked after controversial plans for a Tesco Express won approval.
The plans were given the go-ahead at a meeting of Daventry District Council’s (DCC) planning committee on Wednesday last week despite criticism from residents and the parish council.
The store will be built on the site of The Globe Hotel on the A45/A5 crossroads in the village along with six new homes. The application has already been the subject of controversy which was called back to the committee following a meeting last month but no formal motion was made to refuse it.
Parish councillor Carolyn Matthews said after the meeting: “I was shocked that the district council did not follow through the plan they had to refuse the application.
“We still feel the A45 is a dangerous road and the current crossings they have planned are a death trap. We will be talking to Tesco and asking them to look at an alternative.
“We will fight every option until there is none left to us.”
The parish council will write to DDC, Highways, Northamptonshire County Council and Tesco to outline their concerns.
One business owner said she thinks there will be a huge impact on the village.
Jane Lovell, who owns Tudor Greengrocers, said: “I thought they would appeal until they got their way. They are the big boys and we can’t compete. It is going to have an impact on people in the village.
“I think all we can do is ride it out and see what happens when it gets developed. There is not a lot else we can do.”
